Why does my John Deere deck belt keep breaking? ›

A common cause of belt breakage is excessive grass clippings on the deck. Grass clippings can work their way under pulleys and deck covers, causing series problems. Make sure to clean off your deck after every mower use and follow manufacturer recommendations.

Remove any dirt and grass around the mandrels and from the top surface of the cutting deck. Remove the drive belt from the clutch pulley (M), mandrel pulley (R) and all idler pulleys (V). Install the drive belt around both mandrel pulleys (R) and around the idler pulleys (V). Install the belt on the clutch pulley (M).
