How do I use Apple Mail to connect to shell.cas.usf.edu?

Installing Apple Mail

Apple Mail is distributed with MacOS X and included in the Dock by default. If Mail is not in your Dock, click once on the desktop to bring the Finder to the foreground, then select Go and Applications. You can then drag Mail to your Dock.

Configuring IMAP and SSL for Apple Mail (for the first time)

  1. Start Mail by clicking once on its icon in the Dock.
  2. In the Welcome to Mail window, enter the following:
    • Full Name: Enter your full name. (Ex: Paul Erdös)
    • Email Address: Enter your email address for shell.cas.usf.edu. Please note that this will affect how your address is displayed to recipients, so if you would like to keep using your existing address enter that here instead. (Ex: erdos@math.usf.edu)
    • Incoming Mail Server: shell.cas.usf.edu
    • In the Account Type pull-down menu, select IMAP.
    • User Name: login (Ex: If you are erdos@tarski.math.usf.edu, your login name is erdos).
    • Password: Enter your password for shell.cas.usf.edu.
    • Outgoing Mail Server: shell.cas.usf.edu

      (NOTE: If you are connecting to shell.cas.usf.edu from off campus, and you are NOT using USF's iConnect service, then you should use the Outgoing/SMTP mail server provided by your ISP.)

    • Select OK.
  3. In the Unlock Keychain window, enter the password for your MacOS X account, not your Shell account. Then, select OK.
  4. At this point Mail will try and fail to connect to shell.cas.usf.edu. Ignore the errors in each case and select Continue.
  5. In the Import Mailboxes window, select No.
  6. Now that you've created your first account, the main Mail window will open. As your account is not yet configured to use SSL, go to the Mail menu, then to Preferences. In Preferences, select Accounts.
  7. In the Special Mailboxes tab, check Drafts, Sent and Junk to store these folders on the server.
  8. In the Advanced tab, enter the following:
    • IMAP Path Prefix: mail/
    • Check the Use SSL box. The Port field should change to 993.
    • Close the Accounts window by clicking on the X icon on the top lefthand corner of the window, then enter your MacOS X password again in Unlock Keychain. Select OK.
    • In the Save Changes window, select Save.
  9. Apple Mail will attempt to log on to your account. When prompted to verify the SSL server, select Continue to save the certificate.
  10. You are done configuring Apple Mail! Please note that Apple Mail will continue to issue notices about your SSL certificate. This is a known bug with Apple Mail.

How do I use Eudora to connect to shell.cas.usf.edu?

Installing Eudora

You can download Eudora at: http://www.eudora.com/download/.

(NOTE: Eudora supports SSL for MacOS X 10.2 and above. If you have an earlier version of MacOS X, you will not beable to connect to shell.cas.usf.edu with Eudora.)

Once you've downloaded the installer, double-click on the Eudora disk image if your browser doesn't automatically load the file. Thefollowing steps will install Eudora on your computer:

  1. Double-click on the Eudora installer.
  2. Select Continue twice to begin the installation, then Agree to agree to the Eudora license.
  3. Select Easy Install from the installer pull-down menu, then select Install.
  4. You will be prompted to select a folder to install Eudora in. Select Applications, then Choose.
  5. Once Eudora has finished installing, the installer will ask if you want Eudora to be your defailt mail application. SelectYes or No.

Configuring Eudora (for the first time)

  1. Now that you've finished installing Eudora, open the Eudora Applications Folder in the Applicationsfolder. If you'd like you can drag the Eudora icon to the Dock, otherwise double-click the Eudora icon to start the program.
  2. When prompted to import mail from another program, select No.
  3. In the Settings window, select Getting Started. Then, enter the following:
  4. Select Checking Mail. Make sure that IMAP is checked for Mail Protocol.
  5. Scroll down and select SSL. Make sure that Required (Alternate Port) is selected for SSL for IMAP.
  6. Select OK. Eudora will prompt you for your shell.cas.usf.edu password. Enter your password, then select OK.
  7. In the Check Certificate window, select OK.
  8. Eudora will create several files for your account. Once Eudora's done, Eudora will ask if you want to automatically expunge commands on your IMAP mailboxes. Select Yes.
  9. In the Check Certificate window, select OK. Once you've done so, Eudora will download a list ofmessages on your account. Depending on how many messages you have, this may take a few minutes.
  10. That's it! Eudora is now installed.

In some cases, Eudora will not save Shell's SSL certificate to your MacOS X keychain. If Eudora keeps asking to verify Shell's certificate, do the following:

  1. In the Finder menu, select Go, then Utilities.
  2. Double-click on Keychain Access. Select Unlock if the keychain is locked. If you are prompted foryour password, enter your MacOS X login password.
  3. Select and delete all shell.cas.usf.edu entries.
  4. Quit Keychain Access, then start Eudora. Eudora should ask once for your password and certificate, then save both.

How do I use Thunderbird to connect to shell.cas.usf.edu? (RECOMMENDED)

Installing Thunderbird

You can download Thunderbird at:http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/.

The following steps will install Thunderbird on your computer:

  1. Double-click on thunderbird-macosx.dmg, if your browser hasn't opened the disk image.
  2. Drag the Thunderbird icon to your Applications folder. If you don't know where the Applications folder is located, click once on your desktop, then select Go and Applications from the Finder menu.
  3. If you'd like to put Thunderbird in your Dock, drag the Thunderbird icon from the Applications folder to your Dock.

Configuring Thunderbird (for the first time)

  1. Start Thunderbird by double-clicking on the Thunderbird icon in your Applications folder, or by clicking on the Thunderbirdicon in your Dock.
  2. In Import Settings and Mail Folders, select Don't import anything, then select Next.
  3. In New Account Setup, select Email account, then select Next.
  4. In Identity, enter your name and e-mail address. For example:
    • Your Name: Richard Feynman
    • Email Address: feynman@shell.cas.usf.edu
  5. Select Next.
  6. In Server Information, select IMAP for your server type, then enter the following:
    • Incoming Server: shell.cas.usf.edu
    • Outgoing Server: shell.cas.usf.edu

    (NOTE: If you are connecting to shell.cas.usf.edu from off campus, and you are NOT using USF'siConnect service, then you should use the outgoing mail server provided by your ISP.)

  7. Select Next.
  8. In User Names, select Next.
  9. In Account Name, select Next unless you would like to continue using your old e-mail address.If you'd like to continue using your old address enter it here, then select Next.
  10. Select Finish.
  11. In the Mozilla menu, select Tools, then Account Settings.
  12. In Server Settings, make sure that Use secure connection (SSL) is checked.
  13. In Outgoing Server (SMTP), make sure that Use name and password is not checked.
  14. Select OK to save your settings and close the Account Settings window.
  15. Click on the Get Mail icon to connect to shell.
  16. In the Unable to verify the identity of shell.cas.usf.edu as a trusted site window, selectAccept this certificate permanently, then select OK.
  17. When prompted, enter your shell.cas.usf.edu password. If you'd like Thunderbird to remember your password, checkUse Password Manager to remember this password and select OK.
  18. And that's it.

How do I use Eudora to connect to shell.cas.usf.edu?

Installing Eudora

You can download Eudora at:http://www.eudora.com/download/.

The following steps will install Eudora on your computer:

  1. Double-click on the Eudora installer.
  2. Select Next to begin the installation, then Yes to agree to the Eudora license.
  3. In Choose Components, select Next.
  4. In Choose Destination Location, select Next.
  5. In Choose Data Folder, select Next.
  6. In Your Selections, select Next.
  7. Eudora's installer will ask if you want to create a shortcut on your desktop. Select Yes, then Next.
  8. In Additional Eudora Services uncheck both boxes, then select Finish.

Configuring Eudora (for the first time)

  1. Now that you've finished installing Eudora, double-click on the Eudora icon on your desktop to start the program.
  2. Eudora will ask if you'd like to set it as the default mail program. Check Don't ask me anymore, then selectYes or No.
  3. Select OK to configure the free version of Eudora, then select Next.
  4. In New Account Wizard, select Cancel.
  5. Select OK when prompted about Eudora's junk mail filters.
  6. In Eudora, select the Tools menu, then Options.
  7. Select the Getting Started icon. Here's an example of how to fill in your account information:
    • Real Name: Richard Feynman
    • Email Address: feynman@shell.cas.usf.edu
    • Mail Server (Incoming): shell.cas.usf.edu
    • User Name: feynman
    • SMTP Server (Outgoing): shell.cas.usf.edu

      (NOTE: If you are connecting to shell.cas.usf.edu from off campus, and you are NOT using USF'siConnect service, then you should use the Outgoing/SMTP mail server provided by your ISP.)

    • Allow Authentication: Checked.
  8. Select the Checking Mail icon. In the Secure Sockets When Receiving pull-down menu, selectRequired, Alternate Port
  9. Select the Incoming Mail icon. Make sure the following is checked:
    • Server Configuration: POP
    • Leave Mail on Server: Checked (IMPORTANT!)
  10. Select OK to save your settings, then select File and Check Mail. Eudora will ask if you'd like to save Shell's SSL certificate. Select Yes. The connection will fail, but this is "okay."
  11. In the Eudora menu, go to Tools, Options then Checking Mail. Select Last SSL info.
  12. In the Eudora SSL Connection Information Manager, select the Certificate Information Manager button.
  13. Select Add To Trusted then Done to add the certificate to your list. Select OK to close the certificate manager.
  14. Select OK to save your settings.
  15. Now that you've configured an account profile with POP, and downloaded the SSL certificate for Shell, go to Tools, then Options in the Eudora menu.
  16. Select Incoming Mail, then change your Server Configuration to IMAP.
  17. Select OK to save your settings, then enter your password when Eudora requests it.
  18. And that's it.

How do I use Outlook 2003 to connect to shell.cas.usf.edu?

Installing Outlook 2003

Outlook 2003 is distributed with Office 2003. If you don't have an Outlook icon on your desktop or inyour taskbar, select Start, Programs and Microsoft Office. You can launchOutlook from the menu,or right-click on the application icon and drag it to your desktop to create a shortcut.

Installing shell.cas.usf.edu's SSL Certificate (REQUIRED)

  1. Shell uses SSL to encrypt mail and passwords. In order to download the SSL certificate for shell.cas.usf.edu, startInternet Explorer, and go to: https://shell.cas.usf.edu:993

    (NOTE: This step will only work with Internet Explorer for Windows.)

    Once you have connected to the website, Internet Explorer will display a window called Security Alert.Complete the following steps to install Shell's SSL certificate:

  2. In Security Alert, select View Certificate.
  3. In Certificate, select Install Certificate.
  4. In Certificate Import Wizard, select Next.
  5. In Certificate Import Wizard: Certificate Store, make sure the Automatically select thecertificate store based on the type of certificate box is checked, then select Next.
  6. In Completing the Certificate Import Wizard, select Finish.
  7. In Security Warning select Yes to install the certificate. Then, selectOK to close the Certificate Import Wizard.
  8. In Certificate, select OK.
  9. Close the Security Alert window by selecting No. You have now installed the SSLcertificate for shell.cas.usf.edu!

Configuring IMAP and SSL for Outlook 2003 (for the first time)

  1. Start Outlook 2003.
  2. Select the Tools menu, then E-Mail Accounts
  3. In E-mail Accounts, select Add a new e-mail account, then select Next.
  4. In Server Type, select IMAP, then select Next.
  5. In Internet E-mail Settings (IMAP), enter your name and e-mail address under User Information.
  6. Under Server Information, enter shell.cas.usf.edu as your incoming and outgoing mail server.

    (NOTE: If you are connecting to shell.cas.usf.edu from off campus, and you are NOT using USF'siConnect service, then you should use the Outgoing/SMTP mail server provided by your ISP.)

  7. If you would like Outlook to remember your password, enter your password under Login Information, then checkRemember password. If you would like to enter your password when you log in, leave both blank.
  8. Select More Settings. In Internet E-mail Settings, select the Advanced tab.
  9. Under Server Port Numbers, check This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL) for yourIncoming server. Your incoming server port should change to 993. You do not need to check anything for the Outgoing server.

    (NOTE: If you are connecting to shell.cas.usf.edu from off campus, and you are NOT using USF's iConnect service, then your ISP may require a secure connection for outgoing mail.)

  10. Select OK, then select Next. When prompted, select Finish.
  11. That's it! You've configured an IMAP profile for Outlook 2003.

How do I use Outlook Express to connect to shell.cas.usf.edu?

Installing Outlook Express

Outlook Express is distributed with Windows 9x, NT, 2000 and XP. If you don't have an Outlook Express icon on your desktop or in your taskbar, select Start, Programs and Microsoft Networking. You can launch Outlook Express from the menu, or right-click on the application icon and drag it to your desktop to create a shortcut.

Installing shell.cas.usf.edu's SSL Certificate (REQUIRED)

  1. Shell uses SSL to encrypt mail and passwords. In order to download the SSL certificate for shell.cas.usf.edu, start Internet Explorer, and go to: https://shell.cas.usf.edu:993

    (NOTE: This step will only work with Internet Explorer for Windows.)

Configuring IMAP and SSL for Outlook Express (if you have already have an account profile)

If you have an account profile for tarski, chuma or luna a few changes will allow that profile to work with shell.cas.usf.edu:

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. Select the Tools menu, then Accounts.
  3. In Internet Accounts, select the Mail tab.
  4. Click once on your account entry to highlight it, then select Properties.
  5. In the Properties window, select the General tab. If you would like to continue using your original address, enter that address in the E-mail address and Reply address fields, then select Apply. Otherwise, enter login@shell.cas.usf.edu for your address in both fields. (Ex: If you are erdos@tarski.math.usf.edu, your login name is erdos)
  6. In the Servers tab, enter shell.cas.usf.edu for Incoming mail and Outgoing mail. Then, select Apply.

    (NOTE: If you are connecting to shell.cas.usf.edu from off campus, and you are NOT using USF's iConnect service, then you should use the Outgoing/SMTP mail server provided by your ISP.)

  7. In the Advanced tab, under Incoming Mail check This server requires a secure connection (SSL), then select Apply.
  8. Select OK to close the Properties window.
  9. In Internet Accounts, select Close.
  10. Quit Outlook Express and restart the program. That's it!

In some cases changing your account settings will confuse Outlook Express. If you connect to your account and receive an IMAP folder error, do the following:

  1. In Outlook Express, select Tools, then IMAP Folders.
  2. Select Reset List to refresh your folder list, then select OK to close the Show/Hide IMAP Folders window. Your folder list will refresh on the left-hand side of the Outlook Express window.

How do I use Thunderbird to connect to shell.cas.usf.edu? (RECOMMENDED)

Installing Thunderbird

The following steps will install Thunderbird on your computer:

  1. Double-click on the Thunderbird installer, then select Next.
  2. Select I Accept the terms of the License Agreement, then select Next.
  3. In Setup Type select Standard, then select Next.
  4. In Summary, select Next.
  5. Once Thunderbird is finished installing, uncheck Launch Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 now and select Finish.

Configuring Thunderbird (for the first time)

  1. Double-click on the Mozilla Thunderbird icon on your desktop.
  2. In Import Wizard, select Don't import anything, then select Next.
  3. In New Account Setup, select Email account, then select Next.
  4. In Identity, enter your name and e-mail address. For example:
    • Your Name: Richard Feynman
    • Email Address: feynman@shell.cas.usf.edu
  5. Select Next.
  6. In Server Information, select IMAP for your server type, then enter the following:

  14. Select OK to save your settings and close the Account Settings window.
  15. Click on the Get Mail icon to connect to Shell.
  16. In the Web Site Certified by an Unknown Authority window, select Accept this certificate permanently, then select OK.
  17. When prompted, enter your shell.cas.usf.edu password. If you'd like Thunderbird to remember your password, checkUse Password Manager to remember this password and select OK.
  18. And that's it.
